The ancient rock-cut cave temple and first holy abode of Lord Murugan.
Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple, located in Thiruparankundram on the outskirts of Madurai, is a historic rock-cut cave temple. It is highly venerated as the first of the six holy abodes (Arupadaiveedu) of Lord Murugan. Built by the Pandya Kings in the 6th century AD, the temple is carved directly out of a massive granite rock hill and represents a masterpiece of ancient Dravidian cave architecture.
Thiruparankundram is the sacred location where Lord Murugan wedded Goddess Deivayanai, the daughter of the king of gods, Indra, as a token of gratitude for defeating the demon king Surapadman. Because of this divine marriage, the temple is considered one of the most auspicious places in Tamil Nadu for conducting weddings and religious ceremonies.
