Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal is a grand 17th-century palace constructed in 1636 AD by King Thirumalai Nayak, who ruled Madurai's Nayak kingdom. The palace is a classic blend of Italian, Dravidian, and Islamic architectural styles, representing the peak of Nayak artistic excellence and architectural grandeur.


Architectural Magnificence

  • Giant Pillars: The courtyard of the palace is lined with massive circular pillars measuring 82 feet in height and 19 feet in circumference, coated in polished shell-lime plaster.
  • The Durbar Hall: The grand audience hall features highly decorated arches and domes supported by the signature giant pillars, which were once decorated with gold and jewels.
  • Light and Sound Show: Every evening, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department organizes a spectacular Sound and Light Show in both Tamil and English, narrating the legendary story of King Thirumalai Nayak.
