About Meenakshi Temple


Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is a historic Hindu temple located on the southern bank of the Vaigai River in the temple city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi (a form of Goddess Parvati) and her consort Sundareswarar (a form of Lord Shiva), it forms the religious heart and lifeline of the 2,500-year-old city of Madurai.


Key Highlights

  • Towering Gopurams: The temple complex is surrounded by 14 majestic gateway towers (gopurams), with the southern tower being the tallest at 51.9 metres (170 ft) and covered in thousands of colorful stone sculptures of gods and demons.
  • Golden Lotus Pond (Porthamarai Kulam): A sacred water pool inside the temple where devotees take a ritual cleansing dip, traditionally famous as a meeting place for Sangam poets.
  • Thousand Pillar Hall (Ayiramkaal Mandapam): A museum-like hall featuring 985 artistically carved stone pillars, each displaying unique mythological figures and playing musical notes when tapped.
