Gandhi Memorial Museum

A solemn monument preserving the life, struggle, and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.

About the Gandhi Museum

The Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai is one of the five major Gandhi Sangrahalayas (museums) in India. Established in 1959, it is housed in the historic Tamukkam Palace, which was originally built in 1670 AD for Rani Mangammal of the Nayak dynasty. The museum stands as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi's deep connection with Madurai, where he famously chose to adopt the simple loincloth in 1921 to identify with the poor.
