About Alagar Kovil


Arulmigu Kallalagar Temple, located in Alagar Koyil village near Madurai, is a historic Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Nestled against a picturesque backdrop of lush green hills, this temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu shrines) and is renowned for its architectural grandeur, detailed stone carvings, and deep spiritual sanctity.


The Divine Chithirai Festival

The temple is central to the famous Chithirai Festival of Madurai, which celebrates the journey of Lord Alagar (a form of Vishnu) from Alagar Kovil to Madurai to attend the celestial wedding of his sister Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar. The spectacular event where Lord Alagar enters the Vaigai River in a golden chariot is witnessed by millions of devotees.
